What does functional quality mean in TMAP?

In TMAP we call this quality attribute functional quality: the overarching umbrella that covers everything related to whether software actually does what it is meant to do for the right audience, in the right context and across all relevant scenarios.

2. “But the requirement clearly said this, right?”

Unexpected behaviour caused by side effects, incomplete scenarios or incorrect assumptions. Think of events that fire too early or too late, automated actions that override user input or logic that depends on data no one mentioned. These cases aren’t just familiar. They are valuable. They show why functional quality must be tested intelligently, not instinctively.

How to test functional quality with TMAP in practice

You don’t test functionality by clicking around and hoping the happy path holds. It requires structure and realism. TMAP does this by linking functionality to user goals, risks, scenarios and the test basis.

Aligning functional tests with goals instead of features ensures you test what the user is trying to achieve, not what the team built.

2. Use functional scenarios, including edge cases

Functional bugs almost always hide in:

  • alternative sequences
  • incomplete input
  • unexpected choices
  • outdated data
  • repeated actions
  • error paths

TMAP requires these scenarios to be part of the test design. Not as an afterthought, but as core coverage.

3. Test the impact, not just the function

A function can work correctly, but behave incorrectly in the bigger picture.

Examples:

  • A change in one screen breaks workflow logic elsewhere.
  • A new calculation works but disrupts downstream systems.
  • An event triggers at the wrong moment.

4. Validate the definition of “correct” with every role
